Hello

I am Michael Sam Jr, a mentor at heart and educator by profession. After spending over a decade working directly with youth as a school-based College Counselor, Social Studies Teacher, Coach, and Pastor, I have decided to embark on my own journey of ensuring college access is available to all. I am currently a first year PhD student studying Education Policy at Washington University in St. Louis. My research agenda considers how college counselors influence the under enrollment of historically underrepresented populations in R1 institutions. My commitment to this research, and college access in general, was inspired by my own journey as a first generation college student at Rice University and years spent as a College Counselor.

As a College Counselor, I've had the privilege of guiding students through the complex application and admission process to a diverse range of institutions. This includes highly selective universities like Dartmouth College, Notre Dame, and Rice University, as well as distinguished liberal arts colleges such as Rhodes College, Morehouse College, and Trinity University. My experience also extends to our nation's most respected military academies, including the United States Naval Academy, the Air Force Academy, and the United States Military Academy at West Point.

Beyond traditional applicants, I've had the unique opportunity to support domestic and international athletes in their recruitment journeys. As a former Division I college athlete, I intimately understand the critical role of timing, exposure, and consistent contact in this process. Leveraging this firsthand knowledge, I've successfully helped student-athletes achieve placement at institutions like Stephen F Austin State University, Georgetown University, among others, enabling them to pursue their athletic and academic aspirations.

In addition to my work as a College Counselor, I have also enjoyed the privilege of serving as a seasonal undergraduate admissions reader at Boston University, a committee member for the Wabash College Lilly Scholarship, a member of the Counselor Advisory Board at The Ohio State University, and member of the Scholarship Review Committee at the Greater Houston Community Foundation.

I am confident that my range of experiences has uniquely equipped me to support your student in their college going journey!
